Waltair division pips Khurda in revenue earnings

Visakhapatnam: After Khurda division pipped Waltair division in terms of earnings in 2013-14, the Vizag-based division has sprung back in the last three financial years and is expected to cross around 50% of the passenger and freight earnings of the East Coast Railway zone in the 2015-16 fiscal.

The development interestingly comes at a time when various civil organisations are demanding that a separate railway zone be formed in AP with the headquarters in Vizag.
According to railway sources, Waltair division is expected to garner a revenue of around Rs 6,800 crore from both passenger and freight during 2015-16 fiscal which is approximately around 50% of East Coast Railway zone’s earnings. The railway zone comprises three divisions – Khurda, Waltair and Sambalpur.

As per a statement tabled in the Lok Sabha by minister of state for railways Manoj Sinha, East Coast Railway garnered revenue to the tune of Rs 12,179.38 crore in 2013-14 of which Waltair division accounted for Rs 6,265.28 crore – about 51.44% revenue of the entire zone.
Similarly, in 2014-15, Waltair division garnered Rs 6,592.99 crore out of the Rs 12,534.07 crore in freight and passenger earnings – about 52.6% revenue of East Coast Railway zone’s revenue.

Meanwhile, in 2015-16, East Coast Railway earned Rs 13,512.16 crore as per the minister’s statement. Sources at Waltair Division said in 2015-16, the division is expected to earn around Rs 6,800 crore (the official figures are yet to be released), which is around 50% earnings of the railway zone.
As per official figures, Waltair division registered a revenue of Rs 5,215.74 crore between April and December until December 2015, which is about 10% higher than the earnings of the corresponding period of the previous year.

“The main reasons for the improved performance of Waltair division is because of long hauling rakes, which means amalgamation of two empty trains are run up to Kirandul. Due to this rake, idle time is reduced and maximum loading of rakes can also be done,” said a railway official. He said, “Also, mechanisation of loading rakes at NMDC, Kirandul has resulted in improving efficiency.” Apart from this, he said, “Traffic facilities such as improving track capacity has also led to the increase in earnings for Waltair division.”

“Waltair division is performing consistently during the last few years and once doubling of Kirandul-Kothavalasa line happens, we can expect higher revenue for the division,” said the official.
