Visakhapatnam: Vysakhi Nrithyotsav-2016 slated to be held from September 22 will be a very special event as dance forms that have never been seen or heard by most music and dance enthusiasts in the Port City will be showcased for the first time, said BR Vikram Goud of Nataraj Music and Dance Academy on Saturday.
Addressing the media in the city, Goud further said, “Apart from Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, and Odissi, the festival will have Vilasini, Purulia Chhau, Manipuri, Pung Cholam and Sattriya performances.”
“Chhau is an ancient dance form from West Bengal that is also practiced in parts of Bihar, while Odissi is from Odisha, Pung Cholam is from Manipuri and Sattriya is from Assam. They are all classical dance forms and extremely varied.”
As many as 60 accomplished dancers from all over India including Odisha, Manipur, Assam, Jharkhand, New Delhi, Maharashtra, and Telangana will perform at the four-day festival at Kalabharati Auditorium.
The organizers said the event will be held on a massive scale and is expected to draw huge crowds.
They further added that by promoting many of these unknown classical dance forms in Visakhapatnam, they wish to make the city a base for all dance forms.
Governor of Tamil Nadu and former chief minister of Andhra Pradesh, K Rosaiah said, “Vizag has always been the cultural capital of Andhra Pradesh and the promotion of such festivals will draw not just the art aficionados but also the common people as well.”
