Visakhapatnam: Having earmarked around 79 acres for developing a sports complex at Gandigundam in the city, the Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority (Vuda) has invited designs from architects for the sports complex to be submitted by May 14.
Vuda has been assigned the task of preparing designs for the sports complex, which includes a stadium and supporting facilities for organising international, national and regional level sports events.
Vuda vice-chairman T Baburao Naidu said the sports complex proposed at Gandigundam would become a global attraction with all unique features adding to the image of the city.
The vice-chairman held a meeting with architects on Wednesday to decide the factors and features of the designs. He said the designs should consist of unique features addressing all requirements for conducting sports events and coaching activities.
About 32 sports events have been identified for the sports complex and the final design will be picked by chief minister Chandrababu Naidu, the vice-chairman said. The designs should include plans for the the best stadium, attractive landscaping and green cover along with proper parking slots both multi-level and underground to meet the future demands, he said.
The chief minster has proposed to host the next national games in Vizag, and for the purpose, the sports complex is needed to be completed by 2018.
Vizag West MLA PGVR Naidu has suggested the reservation of a portion of land for future development to add new requirements and amenities. Since the proposed sports complex is bigger than the Gatchibowli stadium and a landmark for Visakhapatnam, facilities should be state-of-the-art, he added.
Vuda secretary A Srinivas said the inclusion of facilities for accommodation, hospitality, sale points for sports material and other needs should be given importance while preparing the designs.
