Vizag to get biggest marine fish market

VISAKHAPATNAM: Vizag will soon get a modern marine fish market, the biggest of its kind in the country . The market will come up at the Fishing Harbour, besides Visakhapatnam Port. It will be operational early next year.

The existing market will be dismantled. The Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT) will give around 2,200 square ft of land to the market. The state government will bear 30% of the cost of the project. The National Fisheries Development Board will contribute 40% of the project cost and Tata Trust will share the remaining amount.The estimated cost of the project is Rs 2.75 crore.

 The market will be set up inside the Fishing Harbour, which handles nearly 1.15 lakh tonnes of fish, shrimp and crabs. The market is likely to sell about six tonnes of fish daily. As many as 17 varieties of fish including Tuna will be available in the market. At present, the market has about 1,800 vendors. The market will be equipped with closed circuit TV cameras to ensure transparency in the transactions, said a senior official from the fisheries department. Fish traders from Tamil Nadu and Kerala will also be allowed at the market. It will have a sprawling parking lot, canteen and recreation facilities.

“Everything is ready expect the site clearance from the Vizag Port,” said the official.Visakhapatnam collector Pra vin Kumar inspected the proposed site on Sunday . Andhra Pradesh Medical Services and Infrastructure Development Corporation (APMSIDC) executive engineer Umesh Kumar explained the project details to the district collector.

Pravin Kumar said he would talk to Visakhapatnam Port chairman for early clearance of land. He directed officials to invite tenders for the project at the earliest.
