Visakhapatnam: Vizagites are going to enjoy a long festive weekend and the mood in the city is upbeat. Holi and Good Friday holidays followed by Easter are all lined up from Wednesday to Sunday and most offices and schools will remain closed. Some are also planning a mini vacation.
On Wednesday, around a dozen parties, DJ music and a few rain dances were organized in the city as part of the Holi celebrations, especially along RK Beach Road and in the hotels. Mostly youngsters revelled in the festival of colours. Adding a spiritual touch to the festival, the Hare Krishna Movement organised a mahabhisekham at Alwardas Grounds on the occasion of Sri Gaura Purnima.
Besides the big shops, at almost every street corner, on push carts, holi colours, gulal and ‘pichkaries’ (colour sprays) were being sold which denizens were found purchasing with great enthusiasm. “The residents of our apartment and a few neighbours all got together and play Holi on the roof and then we all had lunch together,” said S Harika, a student from Lawson’s Bay Colony.
There are a few enthusiastic travel aficionados who are also planning a weekend getaway to somewhere nearby. “My husband has got his office holiday on Wednesday and Friday. He has managed the Thursday off too. That’s getting us an extended weekend from Wednesday to Sunday. Therefore, along with the kids, we are driving off to Chilka in Odisha on Wednesday to spend a relaxed and fun-filled weekend. Some family friends from Kolkata will also join us at Chilka,” said Samyukta Gupta, a homemaker.
However, those appearing for SSC exams couldn’t participate in the Holi celebrations. “Though I wanted to play with family and friends, I didn’t take the risk. It’s difficult to take off the Holi colours and getting wet with water and colours may cause fever or health issues and spoil my exams. So, this year, I am not playing Holi,” said M Deepika, an SSC candidate from the city.
