CM to inaugurate abattoir this month
Visakhapatnam: The modern abattoir at Marikavalasa on the city outskirts is to be inaugurated on either May 21 or the end of this month by chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu, said HRD minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao.
After inspecting the progress of the project along with officials of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) including commissioner Pravin Kumar on Saturday, the minister said the Rs 40 crore project would be one of the biggest abattoirs in the country. The meat would also be exported abroad, he said.
The abattoir, which was supposed to be operational by November 2015, got delayed due to land disputes between the state government and private parties.
It has been constructed on a 11.4 acre land along the National Highway-16. In terms of capacity, it is the third of its kind in the country with the first being in Maharashtra and the second in Uttar Pradesh.
Meanwhile, the HRD minister suspended two sanitation staff for failing to maintain cleanliness in zone-1 of the GVMC.
