BSNL A.P. Circle, which comprises Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, has registered an 8 per cent growth in revenue during 2015-16, making it the number one in growth rate at the All-India level, according to its Chief General Manager P.V. Muralidhar.
Addressing a media conference here on Thursday, the CGM said that the circle generated additional revenue of Rs. 160 crore during the just-concluded financial year. The revenue of the circle during 2014-15 was around Rs. 2,400 crore. During the last financial year, 17 lakh new mobile connections were issued in the AP Circle. He said that data usage was on the rise and hence the thrust was on improvement of data services.
He said that there were 3,500 3G towers and 7,500 2G towers in AP Circle. Another 1,450 3G data towers would be added in the circle during the present financial year. Visakhapatnam would get around 100 of these.
Mr. Muralidhar said that there were 380 Wi-Fi hot spots in AP and they were very popular among users as they were much cheaper than 3G. When his attention was drawn to the fact that lack of publicity and non-availability of vouchers for Wi-Fi users after the 30 minutes of free usage was a problem in the city, the CGM said that vouchers could be obtained online. He said that with a 15 per cent share, BSNL was in the third position in cellular connections in AP circle. On the delay in the introduction of 4 G services by BSNL, the CGM was optimistic that 4 G services would be launched by the end of the year. Principal GM, Visakhapatnam Telecom District, RMM Krishna and Senior General Manager (Consumer Mobility) Neelima Varma were present.
