AP Fiber Grid to be launched today

VISAKHAPATNAM: With the ambitious aim of providing Internet connection to every household in Andhra Pradesh, chief minister Chandrababu Naidu is to launch phase-1 of the AP Fiber Grid in the Port City on Thursday.

Phase-1 of the project includes setting up a state-wide high speed optical fiber infrastructure utilising the existing assets of the electricity transmission/ distribution companies such as electrical poles and sub-stations.

At the same time, the fiber grid aims to establish a scalable infrastructure and network with a business model of infrastructure as a service (Iaas) and platform as a service (Paas) on a non-discriminatory basis to ISPs, TSPs, MSOs and content providers with their services being extended to last mile user through PoPs (Point of Presence) at around 2,449 sub-stations and further utilising the existing LCO network wherever available.

Also, the AP government wants to develop sustainable business models for last mile operators and provide institutional ecosystem with a platform for delivering products and services.

The AP Fiber Grid includes 22,500 kms of ADSS optical fiber cable, 3.75 lakh electrical poles and 2449 PoPs in sub-stations to reach 1.1 crore households, 52000 plus schools and 6580 primary health centres and 10000-plus telco towers and government offices with a 1.3 TB capacity network.

The AP Fiber Grid will build and operate various components including a service operations centre, network operations centre as well as the aerial fiber network and also a component connecting this network to the nearest PoP provided.

According to the state government, the potential advantages from phase-1 include high speed internet broadband availability to the private sector and government at an affordable price along with the option of video conferencing for government offices in the state.

Phase-II of the project aims to create a robust and highly reliable optical fiber network infrastructure. It is planned to set up an underground fiber network under phase-2 of the AP fiber grid project after completing the aerial network. The two networks including the aerial and underground will be complementary in nature, as per information provided by the AP State Fibernet Limited.

The AP Fiber Grid is among the five grids planned in AP including power, water, road and gas grids.
